In a tribe of beastkin, the Praise Moon Festival is held once every three years, and whoever catches a moonflower enters a binding contract. Iris never wanted to take part, but her fiancé Ash signed her up without asking. When her moonflower falls, her brother James and her childhood friend Liam help Ash catch Chloe's flower instead, and Iris's own lands in the hands of Rex, a lone dragon beastkin said to have lost three mates.

Overhearing Ash, James and Liam agree that his contract with Chloe is a fake wedding, and that Iris will simply give in. At home, her father blames her and takes Chloe's side, while her mother stays silent. Ash promises they will register at the Alliance later and tells her not to be petty, though a binding contract means marriage to everyone in the tribe.

Iris has always wanted to stay on the Clan Register to inherit her mother's land. Now the Moon God has given a sign, and she must decide whether to accept it.
