At His Funeral, I Discovered His Other Family

On the day she catches her husband Rafe Ashcroft cheating, Liora Vane does not cry or smash anything. She simply slides a divorce agreement across the table. He tears it in half and promises it is over, and for the next fifty years he plays the devoted husband. Then, at his funeral, a woman named Sylvie appears at the headstone and reveals the houses, the money and the son she shared with him, a family he kept hidden from his wife. Liora collapses beside the grave and never wakes.

She opens her eyes at twenty-five, back on the day she first caught him. This time she hands him the papers again and tells him to cooperate or she will file anyway. He begs for one last chance, deletes Sylvie's number in front of her, and swears they will start over. She smiles and feels nothing.

She follows him to a house near Lake Oswego, where a swing bears a plaque for Sylvie, and a transfer to Milan waits for her answer. She accepts it.
