Synopsis
“I’m filing for divorce.”
The words had been trapped inside me for decades, finally finding release that night. I had prepared his favorite dinner, slipped into a dress I hadn’t worn in years, and dared to mention the trip he’d promised long ago.
“France?” he sneered, never looking up from his laptop. “You’re not exactly young anymore.”
“Twenty years ago, you said we’d go when the time was right,” I whispered. “We’d celebrate properly. I just… wanted something for myself after all these years of taking care of you, the children, and this house—”
“Ah, so my life has exhausted you?” His tone was sharp. “Don’t pretend I forced you. You stay home. That’s it. Your ‘job’ isn’t that difficult. Why can’t you be more like Juliette? Smart, independent, unmarried—she’s earned her success, her freedom. She can travel anywhere and doesn’t weigh anyone down.”
He dismissed me completely. And then, by accident, I saw it: an email with the subject line Wedding Confirmation. Xavier and Juliette. France. The guests? My father, our son, and his wife.
Everyone I considered family… except me.
They hadn’t merely left me out. They’d replaced me.
That night, I understood everything. Twenty years of being invisible, of giving everything and receiving nothing in return, had come to an end. I chose myself. I booked a one-way ticket to France and left them behind—finally untethered, finally free.
