She Read Their Lips and Ruined Them

Lottie Bishop is hard of hearing, and the day the Hensons finally bring their birth daughter home after eighteen years, the adopted heiress Sabina Henson leans in close and murmurs an insult she assumes Lottie cannot catch. Lottie opens the live captions on her phone, holds up the words, and asks Sabina to repeat them into the mic. The room goes silent, but her brother Ethan calls it a joke, and Sabina hands her a nameless escort pass so she can never enter her own home alone.

Her birth mother Valerie only urges her to come inside; her birth father Brendan lectures her on propriety and tells her to let Sabina guide her. Relatives gather to meet her and openly wonder how a deaf girl will ever marry. Lottie answers each jab with the captions running, while remembering her grandmother's soup shop, where people tapped a bowl or lit a lamp to call her.

That night Sabina gives her a room beside a humming equipment room, certain she cannot hear it. Lottie takes out her hearing aid, reads her grandmother's message, and decides she will not sit on what she is given.
