The Fickle Heart

Carl Anderson fails to appear at his engagement party to Iris, leaving her humiliated before the business world. She later finds him in a bar, declaring he will never marry her. When Carl weds Angela Moran, he orders his friends to bar Iris from the ceremony, but she arrives with Henry Moran and is warmly greeted as Aunt Iris. That night, Iris tells her stunned parents the engagement is over and asks them to find her a new match.

Remembering Henry's childhood promise to marry her if no one else would, Iris drives to the Moran residence, where she encounters Carl, who is there with Angela. Henry, Angela's uncle, takes Iris to his study, and she proposes a practical marriage. He agrees, giving her a family emerald bracelet and escorting her home.

The next morning, a haggard Carl waits in her living room, wanting to talk. Iris, once devoted to him, now resolves to stop building her life around a man who never truly saw her.
