The Missing Bride

Marwen has loved Peregrine Vale since childhood, but the messages she sends him every day go unanswered. Days before their wedding, the police call her in: Peregrine has filed a complaint claiming she harassed him. Outside the station he tells her to stop sending him every little thing, then drives off to meet his administrative assistant, Linnea Moreau, who receives his replies from morning to night.

Returning to the apartment they shared, Marwen finds the lock replaced and the lease ended. Peregrine has moved out without a word, and Linnea already knows the new condo, having chosen its furniture. Marwen tells her mother she no longer wants to marry him, and her parents return the engagement ring and the wedding money to the Vales.

When Peregrine finally calls, Linnea's voice cuts in, and he comforts her instead of Marwen. Marwen says the wedding is canceled, but the call ends before she can finish.
