The Woman They Underestimated

Three years ago, Emma discovered that her best friend Chloe and her boyfriend Ethan had been flirting behind her back, so she cut them both off and moved to London to start over. Now several top firms are competing to hire her, and she is about to take the role of Chief Strategy Officer at Meridian Group, the industry's leading company.

On the day her plane lands, Chloe video-calls her, bragging that she and Ethan both got into Meridian Group and offering Emma an admin assistant referral, while Ethan mocks her for supposedly never landing an offer. Emma keeps her news to herself and declines both the job and their dinner invitation.

When they run into her at a Manhattan boutique, Chloe belittles her clothes as knockoffs and Ethan stares at how much she has changed. Emma, unbothered, answers the associate in flawless French and draws admiring attention, leaving Chloe's smile barely holding.
