Claire Bennett stumbles into a wedding reception and freezes: the groom shares her fiancé's name. Then Ethan Cole walks down the aisle in the suit she chose for him, and her best friend Sophie Lane glides toward him in white. When the emcee hands Claire the microphone, she opens the wedding file on her phone — Claire Bennett & Ethan Cole, next week's date — and asks the groom if he has anything to say to his bride from next week.

Ethan calls it a symbolic ceremony for Sophie's ailing grandmother, insisting no license was signed and their own wedding will go ahead. But the ring on Sophie's finger is the one Claire designed herself, seventeen revisions, their names engraved inside. That night he returns with Sophie's lipstick on his collar and a hotel key card in his pocket, then tells Claire to handle the wedding details herself.

Claire calls the planner and changes the groom. Nathan Hayes, a friend from high school, writes his name in the groom's field — but warns he will not be a weapon against Ethan.
