Cut My Hair, Lose Your Husband

Chloe's father makes one careless remark about her hair, and that night her mother hacks it off with kitchen shears, sells it, and buys her younger brother Leo designer sneakers with the money. Chloe is forbidden skirts, skincare and anything pretty; her mother calls her a slut and a whore for wanting to look nice. The only gift she has ever received is a crimson satin headband from her best friend Josie.

When Chloe tries the headband on in secret, her mother catches her and lunges to tear it away. Her father's indifferent compliment about Chloe's hair only sharpens her mother's rage, and the shears return in the dark. Chloe lies still and weeps, wondering why the woman who gave her life hates her youth and beauty as a sin.
