Dad Only Loved Me After I Died

A boy grows up caught between two parents who blame him for their own bitterness. His mother, once his father's mistress, was promised marriage year after year and then abandoned for a woman of his own circle; she uses her son to summon his father's attention, and beats him when it fails. His father calls him a liar and a burden, while building a happy new family with a wife and a son named Henry.

When the boy is seven, he falls down the stairs and breaks his leg. Begging for a hospital, he is slapped by his mother and kicked away by his father, who leaves to cook dinner for Henry. His mother walks out too, telling him he is useless to her. Alone on the floor, he dies of the pain.

As a ghost, he follows his father through a grocery store, watching him buy toy cars for Henry without a thought for cost, then into a home full of family photos. When Henry asks for the pouch the boy once gave his father, the last gift from the grandmother who loved him, his father hands it over without hesitation.
