Vera Ward runs a small jewelry boutique in Newport, caring for her Nana while struggling to keep the business afloat alone. When her grandmother mentions that a handsome customer ordered two diamond rings and asked for Vera to deliver them personally, Vera insists it must be a mistake. Aaron Lockhart belongs to New York society, and he is the man who once ended their relationship with a single, quiet goodbye.

The order slip proves otherwise, and Aaron arrives at her shop in the rain, impatient and cold, with his new fiancée Vicky West in tow. Their engagement party is only days away, and he wants engravings inside the bands: a V for her, an A for him. To Vicky, he introduces Vera only as someone he knew in college.
