My Mother's Secret Life Exposed

Joanne is dying of stage four lung cancer, and rather than leave her husband Arthur and daughter Riley behind, she drugs their Sunday roast, seals the windows and turns on the gas. But Riley wakes not in the afterlife — she is eighteen again, in the year she was meant to leave for college, and she and Joanne have swapped souls.

Joanne clings to her old routine, handing Riley a notebook of instructions: drive Riley to school, clean for her mother-in-law, bring Arthur his steak, help her brother Benny with his bookkeeping, keep up appearances with her best friend Meredith. Riley tosses the schedule in the trash. She refuses to play the martyr, and when Arthur demands his lunch, she arrives at his office in pajamas with divorce papers — and a kitchen knife.

Meredith rushes in to intervene, and Riley names her price: the divorce, and a public statement acknowledging Meredith's eighteen-year-old daughter Skylar as family. Riley has carried the memory of Skylar's place in their house since she was ten, and she intends to burn Joanne's world to the ground.
