Two Dollars and a Fortune

When his mother wins a million dollars, she gives his younger brother Logan and younger sister Sienna each a bank card worth five hundred thousand dollars. For Cassian, the eldest son, there are only two one-dollar coins. She asks him not to fight them over it, since he has always been like a father to them.

Cassian agrees—then calmly refuses to keep carrying the sole burden of her old age. He proposes that all three children take turns housing and supporting her, splitting every cost. His mother panics, insisting Logan and Sienna are too young and too busy, though Logan is thirty and Sienna twenty-eight. Logan slams the table, Sienna calls him stingy, and his mother slaps him, accusing him of selfishness.

At home, his wife Vivian packs his mother's suitcase and gathers years of hospital receipts and bank transfer records, ready for whatever comes next.
