For ten years, Callie has been a familiar face on Ironbridge Row, where she owns the land beneath every shop. At Dunn's Corner, Marla Dunn has always set her soup and grilled cheese on the house. But when Wade, Marla's brother, grabs her wrist and throws a bowl of hot soup over her, calling her a freeloader, the other shop owners join in, demanding an end to the old lease and the cut Callie takes every year. They have forgotten who paved the roads and laid the pipes that let their businesses exist.

Wade pushes further, tallying ten years of comped meals into a demand for a hundred thousand dollars, while Marla, eyes lowered, asks Callie to pay for today's lunch and says nothing in her defence. Callie pays the fifteen dollars, then tells Marla the old arrangement is over. That day every tenant receives a notice: lease terminated, vacate within three days.

Soup still drying on her coat, Callie faces the street she built and the neighbours who turned on her, with a debt they never counted on now coming due.
