When a massive earthquake traps a little girl named Nora beneath the rubble, she curls up in her mother's arms, drinking what she believes is red syrup from her mother's finger. Through a small black device, her father Chris's voice orders rescuers to save Chloe first, insisting her mother can wait and will not die. By the time Nora is pulled free, her mother is gone, and the syrup is revealed to be blood.

At the hospital, Chris weeps for the cameras as a devoted father, but Nora soon meets Chloe, who is unharmed and eating cake, and the woman Sabrina, who wears her mother's anniversary bracelet and the perfume her mother hated. When Nora bites Sabrina's wrist, Chris shoves her aside and demands she apologize, ignoring the blood on her own forehead.
