He Lost Me Before He Knew It

On Thanksgiving, Claire's boyfriend Ethan finally agrees to meet her parents, then turns the car around because her phone shows forty-nine percent. When Vanessa calls from the airport, he rushes to her instead, though her battery reads ninety-eight. He brings Vanessa to her parents' dinner, where the cookies meant for him have already been opened and eaten.

At a lunch Vanessa arranges, Ethan produces a log of Claire's phone battery levels and lets his friends laugh. Allergic to seafood, she is told to eat around it, then pressured to peel crab for Vanessa until the shell cuts her thumb. When Vanessa asks for a ride home, Ethan leaves Claire to find her own way. Her phone dies, and a borrowed call brings news that her father is in the hospital.

At the hospital Ethan demands her phone, reinstalls the location app, and shares the alerts with Vanessa. He hands Vanessa the keys to the home Claire's parents helped pay for. With her father needing tests, Claire calls him for help and he asks only about her battery before hanging up.
